In 2014, marathons were staged across the nation and runners from every state donned their racing gear for the 26.2 mile journey. But which state can claim the title of being the ‘#1 Marathon State’? In hopes of answering this national quandary, the Race Navigator team has compiled data from over 1,200 U.S. marathons and compared each state’s running stats. Check out how your state ranked in this battle, and feel free to show your state pride by sharing this article via social media!

The Metrics

In this analysis, we compared five different metrics:

  • Number of marathon races per state
  • Number of marathon finishers per state
  • Number of Boston qualifying times per state
  • Number of NYC qualifying times per state
  • Average finish times per state

We then ranked each state on the above metrics, totaled up their rankings, and displayed them visually in the ‘Overall’ column on the info-graphic to the left. Next, we took it one step further and also ranked the states on a ‘per capita’ basis and displayed that in a side-by-side comparison to the ‘Overall’ ranking. Note that for the 'per capita' calculations, we divided by the state's total population for the first two metrics (# of races, # of finishers). For the qualifying times metrics, we divided by total finishers.

Top 3 States

As noted above, we compared five different metrics for this report. The info-graphic to the left does a great job at totaling those metrics, but we also wanted to break-out the individual Top 3 for each. You’ll find that info below.
