Runner’s World calls the IMT Des Moines Marathon a ‘must’ on the fall calendar. The course showcases the rejuvenated downtown, quaint neighborhoods, and lush city parks of the surrounding neighborhoods. It also loops around the historic Jim Duncan Track at Drake University and traverses paved park trails in Greenwood Park, Water Works Park, and Gray's Lake Park.

This was my first marathon (2015), but not my first race. Expo/packet pick up was fantastic (minus long walk from main parking lot), lots of vendors to check out! Race day was well managed from my view point. The aid stations were top notch! Not only did they have your normal water, sports drinks and gu, but I was also able to find oranges, gummy bears, jolly ranchers, pretzels, cookies and so on!! There was also phenomenal bike support (over 60 bikers) that had food galore if you needed it as well as tissues, Vaseline, ibuprofen, twizzlers was a common thing. They rode all over the course offering those support items and also mental support to keep you going! It was fantastic!! Post race food was wonderful, pizza, ice cream, milk, beer, pulled pork, and so on. I guess the food at this race was big to me, lol!! The course had so many spectators cheering for everyone! At the top of one hill the neighbors were playing the song from Rocky, it was so much fun! Oh, lots of porta potties too. I ran part of the way with a pacer and he was really good! He kept us right on track, great support.

One disappointment was the photos, I ran with my hubby and we only got 1 photo on the course together, even though we ran side by side, especially when we saw the cameras. Also there was a huge painting on the ground of the marathon logo, but it didn't show up in the photos, so that was sad. Another bummer was the music on the course. There was a lot of really good musicians but some were just an ipod playing from a speaker, or playing slow songs, not upbeat to run with.

Overall I really enjoyed this race and will run it again!

Every aspect of this marathon was well-planned and executed -- is was excellent from start to finish. Decent expo (especially for a small town), non-crowded start, plenty of aid at the water stops, good fan support (especially at the track!), cool medal, and the list goes on. I'm definitely coming back.

I'm a Chicago native, so after running the Chicago marathon 7 times, it was time to step out and find something a little less crowded.

Overall, the Des Moines marathon is a great pick for a midwest marathon. It's inexpensive, the logistics are easy, and the organization was great. The course wasn't anything special, but I can't say anything bad about it. The best part is that it was flat and fast. I didn't PR, but it's definitely setup for fast runners to get out and push the limits.
