It starts flat and then has a very challenging middle section of the course before returning along the Back Cove for a flat finish. Highlights of the course include the Back Cove, Mackworth Point, and crossing the Martin Point Bridge twice.

The setting for the Sugarloaf Marathon is breathtaking as it follows the Maine Scenic Highway - Route 27, winding through the beautiful mountains of Western Maine. Despite the mountainous surroundings, Sugarloaf's course is ranked among the top 15 fastest marathon courses in the nation. Also, the weather in the mountains this time of year is ideal for running. Normal morning temperatures range in the 40's and rise to the 70's by the end of the race.

One challenging, but beginner-friendly marathon and companion 10K.
