The Stennis Space Center Marathon offers runners a beautiful, picturesque 26.2 mile run around the perimeter of the Space Center. Run on paved roads, through the lovely wooded areas where wildlife sightings are frequent. The course is flat, fast, and PR friendly, with usual temperatures in the upper 50’s at the start and lower 70’s by the finish.

First and foremost, this race is $35. It's a certified course, there are aid stations, and you receive a participant shirt and finisher medal. For $35, that's a bargain.

If you are someone who runs marathons for swag and crowd support, and to tour big cities on foot, this race isn't for you. If you are someone who just wants to check a state off a list, or who enjoys small races (because they are so much more relaxed and fun), then you need to consider this race.

The course isn't scenic (it's on a NASA rocket test base), but it's a closed course. You're not fighting traffic (and angry drivers), breathing in exhaust, and there's plenty of space for all the runners.

This was my 7th marathon. I've done a couple that were in the 2,000-5,000 participants range, one big one, and the rest have been this size. I really enjoy the small races with 100 or so participants. Does it get lonely? Somewhat, yes. If you train with that in mind, you will be fine.

Pros: Well-organized, course was marked well, aid stations were stocked, and the volunteers were great. They also have a post-race celebration with beer, soda, water, and jambalaya. The medal was nice (I have an ambivalence about finisher medals), and the shirt design was kind of fun. A certified course that is pretty flat means it's a good place to go for a BQ without breaking the bank (Boston ain't cheap).

Cons: The gulf coast gets warm and humid. Keep that in mind. I managed to forget, despite an unseasonably warm week in my own city.
